This song comes from Track 1 of my 2003 CD release "Serious Fun.” I use an A Diatonic Harmonica in 2nd Position (Key of E). Note that the song has two heads, with Head 1 coming back at the end of the song, and Head 2 being used between soloists. Normally, solos start at the beginning of the form, but in this song each soloist starts from the V (bar 9 of Head 2). You’ll also hear a bridge at the...

I don't think anyone explains blues harmonica better than Dave. I'm really glad I found him, and through buying Special 20's, lol. I've signed up for the one month free, but will definitely become a paid member for the next several months at least. Thank you Dave, for sharing your talent with the blues world.

Sir question : I read from Arzaq (I think ..) that when a reed was gapped , it was better to wait 1-2 days before closing the harmonica because of metal (brass in our case) strain relaxation. I didn’t believe too much but …I must say that it did happen on my MB on the 2 reed blow. I had gapped it the way I wanted . But it wasn’t consistent. I had to go to work etc. 2 days later , I tried it…and voila! Simply gorgeous she is now . Coincidence? Comments?

Hello ikust007, we both get around don't we?! Regarding your recent experience--it was no coincidence. I am in the process of formulating my thoughts for a future HARPSMITH Benchcraft UA-cam episode, specifically addressing "Ductility" properties of harmonica reeds. How to use Ultrasonic Treatment for stress relaxation after reed work (tuning, gapping, etc.) to encourage reed longevity. But for now, my recommendation is to allow your harmonica to sit idle for one week, then verify the tuning and playability before securing the Cover Plates. Your HARPSMITH, Kinya

Thank you for addressing this touchy (but needed to mentioned) topic. Yes, soundcheck and getting the amps closer to ear level with proper stage mix - 100% spot on. A real 'band' that plays gigs together with a setlist and stable personnel HAS to have a consensus about what is it: is it a power trio? They might not want a harp player. Vocalist / guitarist who likes the tone color and shadings that blues harmonica excels at? (Muddy Waters / Chicago classic sound): this can be a perfect fit. Getting less experienced players to listen to how Jr Watson, Jimmy Vaughn, Myers Bros back up a harp player can be wonderful mutual growth. Everyone listens better and appreciates everyone's input. If the band is built around a singer its the harp player's job to listen and DO NOT step on the vocal...of course a nice pad / following chord changes can sweeten the mix immeasurably. Pulling a person aside really helps, esp singers: "hey how does this fit?" "this isn't clashing is it?" Genuine appreciation for everyone's contribution means alot. Communication can be nonverbal as well but having (or creating) a role needs to come from some consensus. I heard a trio once with harp playing very low chunky rhythm...later he switched to bass gtr. It was wonderful Earplugs (one ear?) to deal with a loud member / best monitors & placement help too. Thanks again for your video.

I misspoke concerning 'amps closer to ear level'. It can be an option but pointing things in a reasonable direction helps...again less experienced players may only be listening to 'their part'. The bull in the china shop guy can ruin a gig. I recall the joy of shit-canning loud over-playing no-dynamics drummer(s) - once after the 1st set. Listening is a skill - when playing with great musicians it's a major reward of the gig. But hey - all of us has overplayed so try to finesse the situation. Players need to learn somewhere. However Miles Davis advice against hiring old MF's has some truth. Being an old guy myself I'm trying to be alert to the common mistakes Gary and David describe.
